Implants Are Dental Rock Stars

Posted in Dental Implants | February 15, 2016

Dental implants have been around quite awhile, but in the last 15 years they have been getting much greater attention for replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Why? They are the best solution, without exception.

Dr. Egger is a big proponent of implants in lieu of a bridge, which is really the other replacement option.

Why we love implants

Dental Implants• An implant can restore function to a tooth that has so much decay or carries such a large filling that it has become susceptible to breakage.
• An implant totally restores bite function, enabling the patient to eat a normal diet without bite restrictions.
• An implant doesn’t require that the adjacent teeth be shaved down to make room for crowns to hold the bridge.
• Implants keep the adjacent teeth from moving into the space left by the missing tooth or teeth. This keeps your teeth aligned, which helps head off future problems.
• Implants, because they function exactly as a normal tooth does, transfer bite energy downward into the jawbone. This keeps the jawbone healthy and regenerating.
• Implants can last for the rest of the patient’s life, and have a 90 o 95% success rate.

The implant procedure

Here are the steps involved with an implant placement with Dr. Egger.

1. Consultation — A full dental exam is performed, including x-rays and a CT scan. This will tell Dr. Egger if you are a good candidate for an implant. At this time he chooses the size and shape of the implant.
2. Preparation — If a tooth root is still in place, it is removed. The gum is opened slightly to expose the jawbone.
3. Placement — A tiny hole is drilled in your jawbone and the titanium implant is screwed down into place.
4. Healing — This phase lasts from three to six months as the jawbone grows around the new implant and accepts it. This is called osseointegration.
5. Abutment — After osseointegration is complete, a small metal post is attached to the implant and your gum is allowed to heal again.
6. Restoration — A custom fabricated porcelain crown that is indistinguishable from your natural teeth is fitted to the abutment, and your implant placement is complete.
